How do we live now in Fascist Capitalism?
By normalizing. I’ve been noticing how steadily we’ve been normalizing fascist capitalism.
Examples.
We are almost over the way Trump and Vance treated Zelenskyy in the Oval Office. Why? Because the stock market rose for a few evanescent days during Trump’s kiddish yo-yoing of tariff policy. Everybody breathed a sigh of relief.
Even though Trump is showing daily that he can neither “Make America Great Again,” nor arrest the unparalleled brutal aggression of Putin’s Russia against Ukraine, as he promised. He so obviously can’t, that poor impotent puerile thumper on social media, that he’s reduced to feebly exhorting Putin to “Stop!” cannibalizing Ukraine.
MSNBC still finds some comfort in how Russia is laughing at our nonpareil Fascist Capitalism poster child. But the rest of us don’t know what else to do but simply normalize political chicanery and abominable English public school-style hazing among heads of state. (Not to mention their daily, heady, incremental genocide tango.)
In other news, we are now falling headfirst into the trough where the feeding frenzy organized by Jake Tapper over Biden’s many sins is happening. It’s disgusting, it’s shameful, but Jake Tapper wants to sell his book.
Hey, notice how he and Alex Thompson, co-authors, almost channel a kind of East European “fixer” stereotype vibe in this “author photo” above?
Tapper seems, in fact, to have corralled his media privilege and platform to do so. Which makes it even more disgusting. But distracts us, doesn’t it? We are normalizing ageism and terrible psychic cruelty toward a broken old man whose biggest crime, in the end, was that Fascist Capitalism overtook and overpowered him. But the hounds of the press turn their noses in any direction they sniff blood. I hope Jake Tapper makes all the money he wants, since he’s got so much blood on his hands from tearing apart a near-dead man.
And we’ve normalized Gaza being pounded and starved and wiped off the face of “civilization,” because Trump is supposedly making great “deals” out there with his Fascist Capitalism buddies in Israel and Qatar and Turkey and wherever. Even though Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi succinctly said that America should stop thinking its raps on the knuckles of other sovereign states will make them behave differently. (Just look at Putin!)
And in India, Narendra Modi’s minions are going around saying “Operation Sindoor” was the vindication of Indian women’s “honor” (apparently only married women have this honor, though, and that too married Hindu women), and trolling and arresting voices of moderation and dialogue, even if one of them is that of the widow of one of the servicemen killed in Pahalgam, Kashmir by terrorists. Obviously, BJP reactionaries feel Himanshi Narwal’s pain more than she herself can.
Modi’s India has long been shoulder to shoulder, though, with other luminaries of global Fascist Capitalism in showing how Fascist Capitalism can savage the world and citizens under the guise of “patriotism” and nationalism (which words are also, of course, to be understood only as men defending “their” poor, helpless married women by savaging minorities and mad-bulling demands for the absolute obliteration of Pakistan, no quarter given). All this seems normal to educated Indians, who nod approval and express shy or sly personal bloodthirst at such statements, while regular citizens, academics, and journalists are persecuted for reasoning against conflating patriotism and submission to Fascist Capitalism.
Soon we will find all this so “normal,” despite repeated proof to the contrary, that we will accept the natural world turned upside down in the form of floods, storms, quakes, oceans rising, cities sinking, and humanity entering its Anthropocene last gasp moment as also normal. We will adjust to living in scenarios now milked in post-apocalyptic science fiction, in a regressed postmodern primitivity.
We will no longer protest or reform; we will adjust. And our Global Fascist Capitalists will grab the best end-of-the-world bunkers or spaceships to Mars,
and leave the rest of us to slowly die out.
Because, that’s normal.
